Learning and Teaching

The learner's experience is at the heart of all we do and one of the underlying principles in all our work is the conviction that inclusive teaching, learning and assessment is good for all learners, not just disabled learners. Good teaching is accessible teaching. If we help mainstream practitioners to use technology appropriately we extend their repertoire of tools and techniques. By extending their repertoire of skills, they are more empowered to meet the different needs of different learners in different contexts. The JISC TechDis Accessible IT Practice Support Programme is a unique IT qualification focusing on good pedagogy and inclusive practices.

We work collaboratively with JISC Regional Support Centres, The Higher Education Academy and other national organisations focusing on continuing professional development. For Example:

  • JISC TechDis has been represented on the working group producing the forthcoming Higher Education Academy Assessment Guide;
  • JISC TechDis is a member of the E-Assessment Advisory Group, affiliated to the E-Assessment Association, who provide informed opinion to government and other national agencies on matters concerning e-assessment.

As a result of this work at national level, we have been able to raise awareness of accessibility issues in conferences, workshops and staff development programmes in all four UK countries across a range of sectors. In addition to working with national staff development programmes, we influence inclusive practice in teaching and learning by being actively involved with specific programmes such as the JISC curriculum design and delivery project and the MoleNet programme.

We look for opportunities to actively support initiatives with real potential to empower teachers and learners. We have actively supported two such projects (AccessApps and Xerte online toolkits) that have gone on to win international awards.

We also use publications as a way of influencing teaching and learning and we contribute to both academic journals and specialist magazine articles (such as Dyslexia Review and the RNIB insight magazine).
