Overview

There are over half a million learners in further education and another 200,000 in higher education who have declared a learning difficulty, disability or health problem. In 2012, JISC TechDis will be delivering a series of 20 to 30 minute workshops to help you make your learning and teaching accessible and inclusive.

This brand new programme of short online fortnightly workshops wil help you make the most of our tools and services.

Each ‘TechDis Tuesday’ session will begin at 13:00 and last for about 20 minutes. All you need to participate is a computer with a web browser and a pair of headphones.

The first six sessions are outlined below.

10 January 2012 - Accessible text documents: why does it matter and how do you do it?
You’ve heard about the importance of structuring a document for accessibility but what difference does it make and is it really worth it? Where do you begin? Is it difficult? Can it be done retrospectively?

24 January 2012 - Mobile learning for inclusive practice.
Mobile learning offers surprising opportunities for inclusion, despite the the small and fiddly interface of a mobile device. This session looks at mobile learning as a tool for inclusive practice that will benefit both disabled people and the wider community of learners.

07 February 2012 - Vulnerable adults and e-safeguarding.
It is important to safeguard vulnerable adults online. Advice and guidance needs to be available and accessible for all staff and students whether they are in specialist or mainstream provision.

21 February 2012 - Using In-Folio for planning, recording reflecting.
In-Folio is an accessible e-portfolio designed by, and for, users with learning difficulties or disabilities. This is a tool for use across the curriculum and on into employment.

06 March 2012 – Visual impairment and free tools: is it worth it?
There are many assistive technology tools for learners with visual impairment and a wide range of costs. Commercial tools can offer real benefits but there are often free or open source equivalents. What is available? How do you find out about them and are they any good?

20 March 2012 - Learner created content.
Giving your learners the skills and time to create their own digital learning content can empower them to become independent lifelong learners. Creating and sharing content they have generated themselves allows for a greater understanding of the subject and deeper learning.
